Step 1: The layout

  1. Use steaks and a mason line to layout the perimeter of your fence
  2. Ensure everything is square
  3. Don't forget to mark space for gates

Step 2: Dig post holes

  1. Using a post hole digger or auger, dig your post hole to half as deep as the fence is high. Typically about 1/3 of the pole
  2. The hole should be 4 inches wider than the post
  3. Set corner and gate posts in concrete and allow to dry overnight

Step 3: Install railings

  1. Use 2x4's narrow side up
  2. Rails should not be more than 24 inches apart
  3. If railings need to meet on one post, which they will eventually, ensure that they meet in the middle of the post

Step 4: Install fence boards

  1. Depending on which pattern you decide to use, the steps will vary
  2. Typically, boards just go from post to post with no gap in between, however, there are many different styles in which the boards can be attached
